Monday 2nd Sept was the last night of the season for the Juniors. The session involved a competition, followed by presentations and a meeting, that was attended by most of the parents, to review the season. To round off the evening there was a ‘Treasure Hunt’ around the clubhouse.

The Musselburgh Quaich was won by Skye McIntosh partnered by her Dad, Steve (pictured). Also throughout the season an eclectic competition was run and this was also won by Skye who had a best score of three 5s for the three holes. Alexander McGrory was 2nd just 2 shots behind with a score of 17 for the three holes. There was also a number of Juniors who played 3 holes before returning to the clubhouse for drinks and biscuits and a presentation ‘goody bag’ while the Mums and Dads enjoyed a cuppa and a review of this year.

The season started off on the 29th April, meeting every Monday evening from 6pm to 7:30pm with two weeks off in August. There were 7 children on the first night and by the end of the season there were 17 names on the books.

Archie, Doug, Ian, Fiona, Obie, Jack (junior organiser) and Bob have all been ‘disclosed’ so were able to help with the coaching. Several parents also came to help with their own children.
Early sessions began with games to assist co-ordination, listening and carrying out instructions, followed by time on the new putting green (a great help when there are so many children) then a spell on the practice area before trying holes 1, 8 and 9 from the forward tees.

At the end of August we had Frank Scott, a professional coach, to give an hour’s group lesson to 6 and 5 children who gained a lot from the experience.

We feel that good progress has been made and must be built on. We need some new coaches/helpers. Why are some octogenarians having to run a group of 6 to 13 year olds!
So, let’s have some younger volunteers who will go through the disclosure procedure. The coaching/training course is not too technical or difficult; it does not need a low handicap golfer to be able to conduct Level 1 coaching just enthusiasm. The rewards are very satisfying while you help a great group of children to keep enjoying the game we love. They are the future of our club!
